Sailing in the Heat: Staying Safe & Comfortable Under the Mallorcan Sun

Here are our top tips for sailing in hot or very hot weather so you can enjoy every minute without putting your health or safety at risk.
1. Hydration is Everything
Dehydration can creep up quickly at sea, especially when the breeze masks just how hot you’re getting. Drink water regularly — aim for at least 2–3 litres per day — and keep a reusable bottle within reach at all times. Avoid excess alcohol, as it speeds up fluid loss.
2. Dress for the Sun
Choose light, breathable fabrics that cover your skin. Long-sleeved UV-protection shirts and wide-brimmed hats work wonders. Sunglasses with polarised lenses protect your eyes from glare, and a buff or neck gaiter shields sensitive areas from the sun.
3. Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
Apply a high-factor, water-resistant sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) at least 20 minutes before exposure, and reapply every 2 hours — more often if you’re sweating or swimming. Don’t forget ears, hands, and tops of feet.
4. Keep Your Cool
Where possible, create shade in the cockpit with a bimini or sun awning. On deck, avoid prolonged exposure in the hottest part of the day (typically 12:00–16:00). Even a short break below deck with a fan can help regulate body temperature.
5. Know the Signs of Heat Stress
Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, headache, or confusion — these can indicate heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If they occur, get the person into the shade, cool them with damp cloths, and rehydrate immediately. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
6. Make the Most of the Breeze
In lighter winds, position yourself where you can catch any airflow. Sailing close-hauled or on a reach often creates enough apparent wind to cool you down — so keep moving if conditions allow.
